This test involves taking a painless swab from the vaginal and anal areas to check for the presence of Group B streptococci.
We recommend the test between the 35th and 37th week of pregnancy and automatically offer it during this period.
The swab takes just a few seconds. The result is usually available by your next appointment and will be attached to your antenatal record.
If the result is positive, there is an increased risk of the bacterium being passed on to the newborn during labour. In this case, you will be given an antibiotic in the delivery room when labour begins to protect your baby. Treatment during pregnancy is not necessary.
The Group B streptococci test is an individual healthcare service (IGeL) and is not routinely covered by statutory health insurance schemes.
We recommend the test to all pregnant women to provide clarity at an early stage and to prepare for the birth as effectively as possible.
